Àngel Fortuño renews until 2030 and reaffirms his commitment to RCD Espanyol
RCD Espanyol goalkeeper Àngel Fortuño has extended his contract until 2030, demonstrating his commitment to his lifelong club. In an exclusive interview, the goalkeeper reflects on his La Liga debut, his journey through the academy, and his ambition to succeed at the team he considers home. Currently, RCD Espanyol sits in 13th place in La Liga with 0 points at the start of the 2026-2027 season.
How was his La Liga debut?
Fortuño recalls his La Liga debut against Real Sociedad with emotion. "It was a dream come true," says the goalkeeper, who was informed of his starting spot a few days before the match. "Manolo told me two or three days before. I was nervous, but I focused on the game," he explains. After learning the news, his first call was to his parents, friends, and girlfriend.
What does RCD Espanyol mean to him?
For Fortuño, RCD Espanyol is more than just a club. He has been with the team since he was six years old and has experienced unforgettable moments, such as the Copa victory against Barcelona. "As a kid, it seemed far away, but as you progress through the stages, you realize it can happen someday," he says. His goal is clear: "I want to succeed at Espanyol, it's my home."
How has his relationship with Joan Garcia been?
Fortuño has shared the dressing room with Joan Garcia, with whom he has competed for the goalkeeper position. "We've competed against each other, and that has made us better," he explains. The 2025-2026 season was a rollercoaster for the team, with a strong start and a more complicated second half. "We started like a rocket, we were fifth. Maybe we thought things we shouldn't have," he recalls.
What are his plans for the future?
Off the field, Fortuño describes himself as a simple person who enjoys spending time with friends or watching series like Harry Potter. His goal is to continue growing at RCD Espanyol, though he also has the Spanish national team in mind. "Any footballer wants to reach the national team," he says. With the team currently in 13th place in La Liga with 0 points, Fortuño hopes to contribute to improving the results.
